People who are depressed may feel less of a sense of belonging and may withdraw from family and friends. However, engaging in social activity helps to decrease feelings of isolation and anxiety, while helping to increase social support.

Research suggests that people with depressed mood react more strongly to social interactions (whether they are negative or positive) compared to those who are not depressed. For example, on days with positive events, people with depressed mood report greater well-being.

Suggestions:

  • Surround yourself with supportive friends and family to help to elevate your mood.
  • Try to take part in a social activity (e.g., going to a movie, going out to eat) at least two hours every week.
